MEET JANIS ISAMAN
You don't need to be flexible. You don't need to be fit. You just need to be ready to reconnect with your body on your own terms, at your own pace.
I'm Janis Isaman. I'm a Trauma Sensitive Movement Specialist, which is a fancy way of saying I help people who have tried all the usual things and still feel like something is missing. Maybe that's you. Chronic pain. Injury recovery. Burnout. The lasting impacts of stress or trauma. Whatever brought you here, I'm not here to fix you. I'm here to walk alongside you while you figure out what your body is capable of. No judgment. Just curiosity.
I work one-on-one. Private sessions. No class to keep up with. No pose to achieve. Just us, moving at whatever pace actually feels right.
My approach pulls from trauma-informed practices, movement, and fitness. We might work with yoga, Pilates, strength training, or Yamuna Body Rolling. The focus is always on what feels safe and available to you. I don't do hands-on bodywork. This is your space.
Most movement spaces ask you to follow instructions. I ask you to make choices.
I am a Trauma Centre Trauma Sensitive Yoga Facilitator trained through the Center for Trauma and Embodiment. I have also trained in Somatic Experiencing (Beginning Level 1) and completed Compassionate Inquiry with Dr. Gabor Maté. On the movement side, I am a comprehensively certified STOTT PILATES instructor, a Yin Yoga teacher, and a practitioner of TRX and Yamuna Body Rolling. I also keep my First Aid current.
Whenever possible, I train directly with modality founders. I have had the privilege of studying with Leslie Kaminoff (Yoga Anatomy), Paul Grilley (yin yoga), Yamuna Zeke (Yamuna Body Rolling), Bernie Clark (yin), Gert van Leeuwen (Critical Alignment), Ana Forrest (Forrest Yoga), Gabor Maté (Compassionate Inquiry), Bessel van der Kolk (Trauma and Stress), and Deb Dana (Polyvagal Theory).
A quick note: I'm a movement educator and trauma-sensitive facilitator. My work is not a substitute for additional medical or mental health treatment. Think of it as a complement to whatever else you have going on and as a way to build capacity and body of self knowledge that leads you to whatever exercise, body awareness, mobility and movement you want to have in your life.
When I'm not in the studio, you'll find me volunteering around Calgary with places like Stampede, Heritage Park, TELUS Spark, Folk Fest, and Theatre Calgary. I also sit on the boards of Globalfest and Reader Rock Garden and work as a freelance photographer. And above all, I'm a mom, deeply engaged and deeply connected.
You don't need to have it all figured out. You just need to take the first step. Reach out for a conversation. No pressure. No commitment. Just a chance to explore what's possible.
